How can suspended drivers legally drive in Pennsylvania? Certain individuals whose driver’s licenses have been suspended because of a DUI conviction or a refusal to submit to BAC testing are now eligible for an Ignition Interlock Limited License (IILL). With an Ignition Interlock Limited License a person may operate a vehicle equipped with an Ignition Interlock system during part or all of the term of his license suspension. This effectively allows a suspended driver to drive.
When an Ignition Interlock system is in a vehicle, the driver must blow into a device. The device will not allow the vehicle to start if alcohol is present. The average cost of an Ignition Interlock system is between $900 and $1,300 a year. When can I get it, and how long do I have to have it?
If your suspension is for an ARD for a DUI, you can immediately get an ignition interlock license. Similarly, if you haven’t had any DUI offenses in the past, but you aren’t eligible for ARD, you can immediately get an ignition interlock for your DUI suspension.
However, if you have any prior DUI offenses, you have to serve half of your suspension before you can get an ignition interlock device. If your suspension is for 12 months, then you can get it after 6 months. If your suspension is for 18 months, you can get it after 9 months.
Once you get an ignition interlock device, you have to keep it installed for at least 12 months. This holds true no matter at what point you get it installed. So, while an ignition interlock device can get you back on the road more quickly, it can actually prolong the period of time that you can’t drive without any restrictions at all.
