Our office is located at Limekiln Pike and Lower State Road at the corner of Montgomery Township that abuts Warrington and Horsham Township. Over the years we have witnessed countless serious accidents at the sharp turn just north of the newly constructed bridge in front of our office. It seems that every time it rains or snows we hear sirens and then see emergency vehicles in that area. More recently, since the reconfiguration of the intersections of Limekiln Pike, Lower State Road, and County Line Road, we are hearing of more serious accidents there, just a few hundred yards farther down Limekiln Pike (SR 152). Does anyone believe the engineering of those intersections makes sense? It’s unfortunately no surprise that yesterday there was yet another serious accident, this time resulting in the death of an 80 year old woman: https://patch.com/pennsylvania/horsham/s/gzaje/80-year-old-killed-in-county-line-road-crash?utm_source=alert-breakingnews&utm_medium=email&utm_term=police-fire&utm_campaign=alert
On the other side of our office, at Lower State Road just before Horsham Road, there is another safety issue. This one probably is not so much an engineering problem as a driver safety issue. I have a friend who has lived in that area for about 40 years. He told me that every month or two he hears a loud bang in the night. He calls 911, goes outside, and finds someone who drove the long straightaway of Lower State Road and grew complacent, failing to anticipate the oncoming bend in the road, and lost a wheel into the deep ditch over the fog line, ultimately causing the car to strike a tree and in some cases overturn. Many of these drivers are driving under the influence, but the sheer number of them creates a safety issue for everyone who travels on that road.
I’m not sure there’s a solution to the latter situation, but I’d love to hear people’s thoughts about the safety of these areas and the traffic engineering that has been implemented. What should be done to make these areas safer? Is there any accountability for the engineers who created these dangerous situations?
